A sanctuary that humans cannot enter, embodying the workings of the primeval forest.
North Lake Forest
A pristine forest untouched by human hands. The vibrant life unfolding in the silence is truly deserving of the term sanctuary. Just standing there reminds one that they are a part of nature.
On the northern side of Lake Akan, deeper within the sacred realm of marimo in Churui Bay, lies a pristine forest woven by the gently flowing Ibeshibetsu River from Panketo. Access to this area is limited to just ten individuals per day, accompanied by a guide certified by the Maeda Ippoen Foundation. Located about 50 minutes by car from Akan Lake Onsen, this region is devoid of any signs of human life, allowing visitors to truly embrace nature's embrace.
The shimmering waters created by the melting snow, the fresh greenery of spring, the blooming primroses in June, the fish swimming in the streams, the singing wild birds, the autumn foliage, and the tranquility of early winter—all the seasonal colors and sounds deeply permeate the hearts of those who walk through this ancient caldera forest.
This is not merely trekking; it is an experience of quietly listening to the mysteries of nature that have nurtured marimo in a world untouched by human footsteps.
