Akan Caldera: A mystical lake where volcanic activity and primeval forests transform the surface into five colors.
Onnetō Hiking
The miracle of volcanic activity encounters the primeval forest, transforming the color of the lake's surface into shades of blue and green, and at times, a mysterious purple. The moments that change expression with each passing second are truly deserving of the name "miracle."
Lake Onneto, born from the eruption of Mount Meakandake, is known for its ability to change colors due to weather, wind, and sunlight, sometimes shimmering in deep cobalt blue and at other times in emerald green, earning it the nickname Five-Colored Pond.
The path leading to the lakeshore is lined with ancient forests of Akazomatsu, where the scent of trees and the songs of birds welcome travelers with each step. Upon emerging from the forest, one is greeted by a breathtaking view of the lake reflecting the primeval woods, along with the majestic silhouettes of Mount Meakandake and Akankofu, creating a landscape that feels as if time has stood still.
Beneath the lake lies a submerged forest, a mysterious topography formed by the caldera. In summer, the sunlight dances on its surface, while in winter, the freezing ice alters its appearance, ensuring that Onneto never presents the same color on any two days, which is part of its allure.
Spending half a day walking through the primeval forest, one can fully immerse themselves in the seasonal colors reflected on the lake's surface and the magical power of the volcano. It is a moment that feels like a journey through an artwork created by nature itself.
