Panorama of Lake Akan Caldera
Climbing Mount Meakandake and Mount Oakan dake
As you ascend the mountain path while feeling the breath of the volcano, you can behold the Akanko Caldera, the lake, and the primeval forest all at once. The panoramic view that unfolds below is a reward granted only to those who have climbed.
Standing majestically overlooking the Akanko Caldera are Mount Meakandake and Mount Oakan. Although they are counted among Japan's One Hundred Famous Mountains, they are affectionately referred to as the youngest siblings of the Akanko trio when compared to Shiretoko's Rausu-dake and Shari-dake, known for their accessibility.
That said, these are active volcanoes. As one progresses along the hiking trails, the landscapes of forest and volcano shift dramatically. Passing through pure forests of Akazoe spruce, one eventually reaches the dwarf pine zone. Beyond the ninth station, the dynamic scenery of the explosive crater comes into view, evoking the raw power characteristic of volcanoes.
While not particularly abundant in flowers, the mountain bursts into bloom in July with alpine plants such as Meakandake Fumusa and Meakandake Kinbai, welcoming hikers with the contrast of volcanic terrain and blossoms. There are two round-trip routes from the Onneto side and one from the Akanko Lake side, along with a traversing course that can be chosen based on physical fitness. Mount Meakandake is relatively easy to climb, while Mount Oakan offers a more challenging experience for those seeking it. Even so, compared to the mountains of Shiretoko, they are milder, and from both summits, one can overlook the hot spring town and forests of the Akanko Caldera, feeling the gentle relationship between humanity and nature.
What unfolds after reaching the summit is an awe-inspiring panorama that seems to embrace the very heartbeat of the earth. The mountains of Akanko quietly tell the story of the coexistence of volcanoes, forests, and lakes to those who visit.
